I get the feeling Micaela McLucas is a party girl, traveling around the beaches and various parties of the world, taking photos and selfies as she goes. Her photos are interesting to me, richly saturated renditions of a seemingly artificial, druggy, glamorous world. Micaela is an LA native currently living in Paris. We were excited to find her beautifully colorful photos in our submissions this week. -CM
1. Why do you take photos? I never fit in anywhere growing up- I was strange, I still am I suppose- but instead of pouting I learned to embrace being the naughty black sheep. Since I was very young, art has always been to me, the way to create my own more fantastic world where I did belong. I drew, I painted, I built bizarre installations with whatever I could get my hands on, etc- but the first time I got to shoot with a camera it was as if a lightning bolt struck down- I’d found my thing that makes me tick and I’ve never looked back.
2. Do you carry your camera with you everywhere you go? Always, always, always, especially when I’m told not to- there is a camera in one hand and iphone in the other, its absurd.
3. What celebrity would you like to shoot most? Snoop Dogg, no contest. It will happen some strange way or another I will make sure of it.
4. What animal would you like to be, if not a human? A panther
5. What is your favorite smell? The girl in me wants so badly to say lavender, but deep down there is nothing I love more than the smell of fresh pizza.
6. Would you like to live forever? Nah I need something to be scared of to keep me on my toes.
7. What do you think is the best photo you have ever taken to date? I couldn’t pick between them I have so many! -one that really urks me though might be where I took a photo of myself giving someone the middle finger deep in the night not knowing five minutes later I was to fall violently in love with him on the spot. Every time I look at it all I can do is laugh and marvel at how crazy and fantastic life can be if we let it (and document it!)
8. What’s your favorite pastime? Wandering aimlessly around in places I’ve never been before
9. Do you like having your photo taken? Far too much- half of me justifies it because I’m always around a camera, the other half of me thinks its pushed my eccentricism even further past the line.
10. Who are your favorite photographers, currently? My career idol is hands down, Juergen Teller, but I also adore Nan Goldin, Martin Parr, Cindy Sherman, Viviane Sassen, Les Krims, etc. I can go on and on: people whose work defines and plays with the medium itself.
