Shoot the Breeze: Rebecca Storm

Intro by Darby Milbrath

As our inhouse photographer, I couldn’t imagine the mag without Rebecca Storm. Becca’s colour flash photographs of filth, fashion, feet and fruit are rousing, cheeky, and disgusting, in that Lynchian, pornographic kind of way. Becca is a bit of a closet maniac with a twisted sense of humour. I can imagine her amused at home; playing the same song on repeat, dementing household items, playing with dolls, cleaning obsessively and eating a plate of chick peas.

1. Why do you take photos?
To remember I guess, and to remind myself that I exist, which sounds a bit nonsensical. It’s also fun to capture or create a space.

2. Do you carry your camera with you everywhere you go?
Yeah usually a little guy, but not my special guy.

3. What celebrity would you like to shoot most?
I’d like to take photos of Willem Dafoe, what a beautiful face.

4. What animal would you like to be, if not a human?
A bird that flies. I’m so restless!

5. What is your favorite smell?
BC definitely has a certain familiar smell that I miss a lot. But I also really like the smell of old office buildings, it’s like a weird mix of carpet, paint and cigarettes.

6. Would you like to live forever?
Would I also have eternal youth? Ultimately it’d be so awful, but at the same time I get super anxious about missing out, I’m not ready for life to end anytime soon.

7. What do you think is the best photo you have ever taken to date?
I haven’t taken a best yet. Although I feel confident that this Poor Gray portrait series is off to a good start.

8. What’s your favorite pastime?
Cleaning or board games, which no one seems to have time for. I also really like consecutively watching as many films as I can by the same director – I don’t have the time to do it as often as I’d like, but that’s definitely my favorite thing.

9. Do you like having your photo taken?
I’m still not totally comfortable with the process of having my photo taken, but it is nice to have photos of myself I guess. Further proof that I exist.
