We’re blown to pieces by Julien Ceccaldi’s show Centuries Old currently on view at Jenny’s and Lomex Gallery in New York, featuring life-size mannequins and skeletons sardonically styled in today’s trends. Ceccaldi explores the “art of evoking demons” in towering imitations of stained-glass windows with titles like “Cute, Aging, and Greedy.” “Haul from Hell,” encapsulates the fleeting joy, then disgust, felt after a shopping spree- evokingTikTok SHEIN hauls, the popular fast fashion brand that cannot be resisted by teens and teen-aspiring older women, despite it’s destruction of the environment.
Masterfully skipping through mediums, Ceccaldi’s comic roots are rendered beautifully in large-scale paintings, light-boxes, clothing, and jewellery made in collaboration with designer Arielle de Pinto. Works like “Obnoxious Shopper”, and “Bypass Thinking,” which depicts a heavily made up corpse removing her brains, bring haunting new connotations to the popular idiom “I’m DEAD.” Centuries Old is a Must See this October.
