Revisiting PlayStation’s 1997 car racing game Gran Turismo is both thrilling and nauseating, the only way I could describe it is as “accelerated nostalgia.” Is this what happens when you die? Gran Turismo is a fitting name for Cristina Tufiño and Jonny Negron’s duo show at Selena Gallery, a collection of multi-media works chock full of cultural references, from 90s Puerto Rican children’s TV shows to Jennifer Lopez’ Y2K Grammy’s dress. In one corner Tufiño’s gleaming bust meditates on Negron’s iconic woman riding a Yamaha jetski. Negron’s provocative female forms reside in his hyper-saturated reality, which functions as sociopolitical satire. Also rummaging through a broad system of cultural references, Tufiño describes herself as an “archeologist hoarder,” collecting “island” objects from sphinxes to oversized noses. Gran Turismo is on view at Selena Gallery until June 9th. -Claire Milbrath
