Kyung Me’s Copy Kitty

Artist Kyung Me is known for her self-deprecating comic Bad Korean, and her intricate, almost nightmarish, graphite drawings. Kyung Me’s latest autobiographical series merges these past projects to create Copy Kitty, a detailed fantasy land coloured by dread and humor. Reinventing the Cheshire Cat as a stand-in for herself, Kyung Me is free to explore the trials and tribulations of an obsessive romantic relationship. The eerie graphite glow of these lavish love scenes brings to mind Cole Porter comedy-musicals of the 1930s. A shimmering fake moon, opulent costume changes, and Depression-era Art Deco set the backdrop for this spellbinding new narrative from Kyung Me. Copy Kitty is on view at Selena, a New York artist-run space dedicated to exhibiting artists of color.– Claire Milbrath
