Shoot the Breeze: Dimitri Karakostas

By Jessica Carroll

A poster by Blood of the Young, a Brooklyn/Toronto zine collective, features Tupac’s face with the words “Have you seen him?” arranged aggressively below. It’s a haunting assertion when you consider it in reference to the rapper, but also rings strangely true with the collective’s director, Dimitri Karakostas. He seems to exist everywhere and nowhere at all, a classic “busy man”; he’s the Online Photo Editor at Vice, project manages at Art Money Gallery and has collaborated with a number of major media proprietors like MTV and Urban Outfitters. But where is he? Chained to his studio desk? Why do we only ever see his bleached-blonde mug for a second at openings and then he’s gone?

It would seem that Karakostas lives his life through his photo work. Chock full of intimate moments with repeat friends and lovers, his work reveals him as a classic graffiti writer, living in the moment. Want to find him? He’s on the curb or in the alleyway, always with a camera in one hand, a paint can in the other, surrounded by the world’s pretty people
