RUNNING ERRANDS WITH THE MILD HIGH CLUB

HEADER

Alex Brettin, the visionary behind The Mild High Club (Stones Throw Records), recently upped his game in a big way with the purchase of a 2004 Honda Odyssey. He used to drive a Ford Transit or something with only two seats and a windowless, caged-in bed that, if you happened to be stuck back there, made you feel like an illegal alien or a kidnap victim. With the purchase of his new vehicle—a seven-seater which features four “captain’s chairs,” an all-leather leather interior, and a CD player (among other amenities)—Alex and his band will be able to tour the continent in style. I spent a few days tooling around town with Alex getting food, running errands and hanging out.

This is Alex emerging from his new van. He looks a little angry or annoyed, but he’s just mugging for the camera.

PIC2

For Christmas this year Alex’s dad gave him the Steely Dan box set, which we listen to all the time when we’re driving around. Not everyone likes Steely Dan.

We stopped by our friends’ AirBnB in Echo Park, where Alex found an acoustic guitar to jam on.

Here’s Alex after a meal at La Reyna, our favorite Mexican place. Alex usually orders a couple tacos or maybe a muilta. I almost exclusively have the ‘caldo de pollo.’

The man in the sunglasses is Andrew aka Burt. He plays guitar in The Mild High Club. He drives a Volvo.
