Native to Seoul South Korea, photographer Minwoo Yoo gave the Editorial a peek into the world as she sees it, with surreal photographs translated from her drawings. At a young age Minwoo began sketching that which inspired her in daily life. Soon after, a love of photography was sparked by a need to express herself quickly and precisely. Inspiration for Minwoo’s photographic composition is drawn from her own sketches, resulting in a photo-realistic world of colours, patterns and dissecting lines culled from her own hand-drawn daydreams. A sort of sleepy mysticism is present in her work, which figures numerous encounters with the female body, and the feisty interactions between the body and its environment. Minwoo’s affection for and attention to the moment is evident in all of her photographs. With her unconventional eye for the beauty in distortion, Minwoo’s work is kinky and exciting. 1. How would you describe your photos?
For the first time, I tried to take instincts and honest things. Recently, I’ve been trying to take collage which are like without any editing but something different in itself.
2. Do you carry your camera with you everywhere you go? I always bring my iphone and I usually use it for sketching. After that when I got ready for shooting I use my camera. Sometimes I could take accidental photos but now I don’t try to wait for them. I make them by myself.
3. What celebrity would you like to shoot most? Actually I’m not interested in celebrities. I just want to take photographs of people who are free spirits. I can figure them out because they emerge by their gestures and looks.
4. What animal would you like to be, if not a human? I want to be an owl or a deep sea animal. I want to experience their own sights what I can’t see now.
5. What’s your current obsession? If I have some ideas, then I got an obsession with putting into action. I have to put an idea into practice.
6. Would you like to live forever? If I can live forever by advanced sciences and technologies, I would be empty rather than happy. I’m satisfied with my allowed life. I just want to live happily during the time.
7. What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given? Do what you want to do now. If you don’t, you will live your life with unwanted things. (I heard this when I changed jobs.)
8. What do you do in your spare time? I usually work or have a date. And when I’m moving to somewhere I think a lot. Having fun with these things, then I’d like to take photos.
9. Do you like having your photo taken? Actually I don’t. It’s awkward for me.
10. Which photographers do you like right now? I like Friedlander, Bresson. His accidental photos are daily things, but amazing. He takes daily things differently.
