Darby Milbrath is no stranger to Editorial Magazine—she is a regular contributor and confidante, (officially “her majesty” in the masthead) and is largely responsible for contributing to the magazine’s aesthetic. When I first met Darby she identified more as a florist or dancer than a painter. Over the years I’ve had the pleasure of watching her coalesce between dancer, photographer, florist, illustrator, master perfumer and painter; she maintains the same careful fluidity and eloquent freedom of movement in all of her practices. Darby is self trained and inspiring in her ambition. Her work explores decadence and darkness, her delicate and harmonious figures suspended in a world made up of dark globs of medieval hues and oozing floral blooms. If you’ve ever been curious about what Darby gets up to in her Toronto studio loft, you’ve come to the right place.
