Zine Review: Dafy Hagai’s Sunset

Today we’re taking a look at some images from Sunset, the newest book from photographer Dafy Hagai. Dafy’s photographic work has closely followed the coming-of-age of Middle Eastern teenage girls, often depicted in her trademark pastel hues. Sunset is a continued exploration of these themes, following a group of local young women set to the backdrop of their bright, touristic beach town in Israel. The town itself is just as much a focus as the girls, however; Dafy captures the beautiful faux-idyllic, and somehow lonely, scenes of the once-luxurious resort town. Reminiscent of the dusty underpopulated Californian town in Altman’s 3 Women, Dafy’s Sunset depicts an eerie dreamworld where young girls amuse themselves in an strange but beautiful beach town.   Sunset is out on Perimeter Books.  – CM
