This editorial was conceived while I was in treatment at a psych ward last year, when Olivia wrote to me about the possibility of collaboration. We’ve been in close communication since then, sending a barrage of screenshots of Sims avatars wetting themselves, iPhone pictures of medical gloves hovering above the snow, and Facebook messages discussing how to negotiate our visions of empowerment and self-acceptance. I suffer from Anorexia Nervosa and I’ve been in and out of treatment for a decade. Although I still struggle with my eating disorder I now identify as an #edwarrior, someone who is fighting back, promoting body positivity and giving voice to mental health awareness. These photos are a reflection of that mindset: the focus is centred on me, as I am, insecure and vulnerable, but also strong, fearless, and seeking agency through our collective fantasies and fascinations. This series asks the viewer to confront an unadulterated female reality: no hair or makeup or other forms of body policing, no agency or corporate representation, no brand name labels (as our beautiful stylist Maria made most of the clothing herself), and no airbrushing or editing.– Anne Tastad
