We’re thrilled to introduce the work of two Fashion Design Master students from the Glasgow School of art, Yifei Liu and Xinyue Zhang. The young Chinese designers’ collections will be featured in the MDes Fashion + Textiles’s Fashion Promenade that takes place today.
Xinyue Zhang
Xinyue Zhang’s collection combines numerous textures and colours through the use of different textiles and embroidery techniques. He finds his inspiration in many things such as art and photography however he refuses to define his garments by the source of their inspiration. Oversized silhouettes, translucent fabrics, faux fur and leather, Xinyue mixes many different materials to flesh out his own unique identity.
Yifei Liu
Yifei Liu’s collection can be understood in three parts, each falling under the concept of time. She uses soil to get across her first element, decay. Burying her fabrics in soil for a few days, Yifei believes the garments communicate with nature and begin to express time. Following decay is ‘shelf-life.’ Inspired by the film, Chungking Express, in which the protagonist compares love to items in a supermarket, Yifei interprets this concept of shelf-life through flocking and embroidery. Lastly, she plays with the idea of germiculture. Conducting different experiments with bacteria, Yifei learnt that, like all other things, bacteria too can face the effects of time. In her collection, Yifei uses felt to represent the concept of bacteria.
