Most well known for her music videos for the UK band Beach Baby, and her photo exhibition of bruises, we’re excited to share the work of the photographer/director Lily Rose Thomas. Her photos are grimy, raw, and intimate – what else would we expect from a young Londoner shooting on 35mm film? See our favourites below.
1. Why do you take photos? To tell a story.
2. Do you carry your camera with you everywhere you go? Yes – even if I don’t use it. If I don’t have it there is usually something I want to take a picture of.
3. What celebrity would you like to shoot most? Anthony Kiedis – are you reading this?
4. What is your favourite smell? Ones that make me remember certain people.
5. Would you like to live forever? No .
6. What do you think is the best photo you have ever taken to date? A picture I took of my sister about 7 years ago – I took it from a balcony and she was lying on a sofa underneath. I think it was the first really good picture I ever took because it was completely unposed – I used to think everything should be very posed. I don’t now.
7. What’s your favorite pastime? Taking pictures?
8. Do you like having your photo taken? Never.
9. Who are your favorite photographers, currently? I love black and white French photography – Robert Doisneau, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Lartigue… I also love photographers like Nan Goldin, Larry Clark, Ryan McGinley… Diane Arbus too.
