Michael Rinaldi

In a world where the line between pornography and fashion disappears, the people working within each field have to up the ante in order to make an impression. Porn gets more graphic and fashion gets more absurd. Michael Rinaldi makes this point in his work by playing with the vernacular inherent to both the world of smut and the fetishization of style. With its brushed, flattened surfaces and its saturated palette, Mike’s work highlights the fundamental detachment of porn, fashion, and the general ‘image’ from any reality outside of the page and screen. The point isn’t a novel one. What’s fascinating, however, is that Mike’s work reveals our collective obsession with the very unreality of the image, especially as it tends to become more pronounced. -JM
